To produce water flow through a fountain until the late 1800’s, and generate a jet of water, demanded the force of gravity and a water source such as a spring or lake, positioned higher than the fountain. Inspirational and impressive, big water fountains have been crafted as monuments in many cultures. The contemporary fountains of modern times bear little similarity to the first water fountains. A natural stone basin, crafted from rock, was the 1st fountain, used for containing water for drinking and religious purposes. Stone basins are theorized to have been 1st made use of around 2000 BC. The force of gravity was the power source that operated the initial water fountains. Drinking water was delivered by public fountains, long before fountains became elaborate public statues, as beautiful as they are functional. Fountains with elaborate decoration began to show up in Rome in approximately 6 BC, usually gods and wildlife, made with natural stone or bronze. The people of Rome had an elaborate system of aqueducts that provided the water for the many fountains that were placed throughout the city.
