Archaic Greek Art: Garden Statuary

Archaic Greek Art: Garden Statuary The initial freestanding statuary was designed by the Archaic Greeks, a notable success since until then the only carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Younger, ideal male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the sculptures, or kouros figures. The kouroi, regarded by the Greeks to exemplify beauty, had one foot stretched out of a rigid forward-facing posture and the male statues were regularly undressed, with a powerful, sturdy shape. In about 650 BC, the variations of the kouroi became life-sized. Throughout the Archaic time, a great time of change, the Greeks were evolving new types of government, expressions of art, and a larger awareness of people and cultures outside Greece. Comparable to many other moments of historical unrest, conflicts were commonplace, and there were struggles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos.

Anglo-Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Anglo-Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest The arrival of the Normans in the 2nd half of the 11th century irreparably improved The Anglo-Saxon lifestyle.Anglo-Saxon Grounds Time Norman Conquest 61781948197.jpg Architecture and horticulture were abilities that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. But before focusing on home-life or having the occasion to consider domestic architecture or decoration, the Normans had to subjugate an entire society. Most often built upon windy peaks, castles were straightforward constructs that enabled their occupants to devote time and space to offensive and defensive schemes, while monasteries were rambling stone buildings commonly installed in only the most fecund, extensive valleys. The sterile fortresses did not provide for the calm avocation of gardening. The finest specimen of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture existent presently is Berkeley Castle. The keep is reported to have been invented during the time of William the Conqueror. A massive terrace serves as a hindrance to intruders who would try to mine the walls of the building. A picturesque bowling green, enveloped in grass and surrounded by battlements clipped out of an ancient yew hedge, makes one of the terraces.
