Outdoor Water Fountains And Their Role in Public Health The first implementation of a sugary drinks tax in the US came in February 2014, when it was passed by the city of Berkley, California. The objective is to get men and women drinking more water and other natural beverages by elevating the cost of soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks. By developing a mobile GPS application, experts were able to gather data on Berkley’s drinking water fountains. This information was cross-referenced with demographic records on race and income acquired from the US Census Community Study database. Comparisons were made between the location and demographic data, showing whether class differences affected access to clean, functional water fountains. The study was able to determine the demographics of areas with water fountains, also observing whether the condition of the fountains was better or inferior in lower class neighborhoods. The fact that the fountains were operating was not a guarantee that they were well-maintained, since quite a few were in need of maintenance and repair.
