At What Point Did Water Features Emerge?
At What Point Did Water Features Emerge? Hundreds of classic Greek documents were translated into Latin under the auspices of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. It was imperative for him to embellish the city of Rome to make it worthy of being known as the capital of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the reconstruction of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. Building a mostra, a grandiose celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the arrival point of an aqueduct, was a tradition revived by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the space previously filled with a wall fountain crafted by Leon Battista Albert, an architect commissioned by the Pope. Changes and extensions, included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
Attributes of Outdoor Sculpture in Archaic Greece
Attributes of Outdoor Sculpture in Archaic Greece Archaic Greeks were well known for providing the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Kouros figures, statues of young, handsome male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the bulk of the statues. Thought of by Greeks to embody splendour, the kouroi were formed into firm, forward facing poses with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were usually nude, well-developed, and athletic. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. A massive time of modification for the Greeks, the Archaic period introduced about newer forms of government, expressions of artwork, and a higher appreciation of people and cultures outside of Greece. Battles like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars among city-states are indicatory of the tumultuous nature of the time period, which was similar to other periods of historical upset. However, these conflicts did not significantly hinder the advancement of the Greek civilization.
