The Early, Unappreciated Water-Moving Plan
The Early, Unappreciated Water-Moving Plan Regrettably, Agrippa’s excellent design for lifting water wasn’t referred to a great deal after 1588, when Andrea Bacci acclaimed it publicly. It may be that the Acqua Felice, the second of Rome’s earliest modern channels made the device outdated when it was hooked up to the Villa Medici in 1592. Even though its success was short lived, Camillo Agrippa’s design for raising water was the wonder of its day, surpassing anything built in Italy since the days of ancient Rome. While there were various other relevant water-driven designs either planned or built during the late sixteenth century, like scenographic water features, giochi d’acqua or water caprices, and musical fountains, none were fed by water like Agrippa’s device.
At What Point Did Water Features Originate?
At What Point Did Water Features Originate? Hundreds of ancient Greek documents were translated into Latin under the auspices of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. Embellishing Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the core of his ambitions. Reconstruction of the Acqua Vergine, a desolate Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the bidding of the Pope. The ancient Roman custom of building an imposing commemorative fountain at the point where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was revived by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the space formerly filled with a wall fountain built by Leon Battista Albert, an architect commissioned by the Pope. The water which eventually furnished the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona came from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.
