Rome’s First Water Transport Systems Previous to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was constructed in Roma, residents who dwelled on hillsides had to travel further down to get their water from natural sources.

Throughout this period, there were only two other innovations capable of offering water to elevated areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which accumulated rainwater. To provide water to Pincian Hill in the early sixteenth century, they applied the emerging tactic of redirecting the circulation from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network.
