"Primitive" Greek Artistry: Large Statuary Archaic Greeks were well known for creating the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of young and desirable male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi were believed by the Greeks to represent beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising stiffness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and nude. In 650 BC, life-size variations of the kouroi began to be observed. During the Archaic period, a great time of change, the Greeks were developing new forms of government, expressions of art, and a better understanding of people and cultures outside Greece. Throughout this time and other periods of historical tumultuousness, encounters often took place, among them wars fought amongst city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan invasion of Samos.
