Fountains Lost to History

Fountains Lost History 5662518778373302.jpg Fountains Lost to History As initially conceived, fountains were crafted to be functional, guiding water from streams or reservoirs to the citizens of cities and settlements, where the water could be utilized for cooking food, washing, and drinking. A source of water higher in elevation than the fountain was needed to pressurize the movement and send water spraying from the fountain's spout, a technology without equal until the late 19th century. Frequently used as monuments and commemorative edifices, water fountains have impressed men and women from all over the globe throughout the ages. If you saw the earliest fountains, you wouldn't identify them as fountains. The first recognized water fountain was a stone basin created that served as a container for drinking water and ceremonial purposes. The earliest stone basins are thought to be from about 2000 B.C.. The spray of water appearing from small spouts was forced by gravity, the sole power source designers had in those days. Drinking water was provided by public fountains, long before fountains became elaborate public monuments, as striking as they are practical. The people of Rome began constructing elaborate fountains in 6 BC, most of which were bronze or natural stone masks of creatures and mythological representations. A well-designed collection of reservoirs and aqueducts kept Rome's public water fountains supplied with fresh water.

The Beginnings of Modern Outdoor Wall Fountains

In order to make Rome deserving of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope resolved to enhance the beauty of the city. In 1453 the Pope instigated the reconstruction of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. The ancient Roman tradition of building an imposing commemorative fountain at the location where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The present-day location of the Trevi Fountain was once occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and built by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. The aqueduct he had reconditioned included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.
