In the days before electric power, the spray of fountains was powered by gravity alone, commonly using an aqueduct or water resource located far away in the surrounding hills. Fountains throughout history have been developed as memorials, impressing local citizens and tourists alike. If you saw the 1st fountains, you probably would not recognize them as fountains. Designed for drinking water and ceremonial reasons, the 1st fountains were basic carved stone basins. Rock basins are believed to have been 1st used around 2000 BC. The spray of water appearing from small jets was forced by gravity, the lone power source builders had in those days. These historic water fountains were designed to be functional, commonly situated along reservoirs, streams and rivers to supply drinking water. Fountains with ornamental Gods, mythological beasts, and animals began to show up in Rome in about 6 B.C., built from rock and bronze. A well-designed collection of reservoirs and aqueducts kept Rome's public fountains supplied with fresh water.

The Source of Modern Day Garden Fountains

The Source of Modern Day Garden Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a well educated man, governed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classical Greek documents into Latin. In order to make Rome deserving of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope resolved to enhance the beauty of the city. Beginning in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent restoration at the bidding of the Pope. The ancient Roman custom of marking the entry point of an aqueduct with an imposing celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. At the behest of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti undertook the construction of a wall fountain in the place where we now find the Trevi Fountain.Source Modern Day Garden Fountains 3758280908.jpg The aqueduct he had reconditioned included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.
