Rome’s First Water Delivery Systems Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct built in Rome, started out delivering the men and women living in the hills with water in 273 BC, though they had counted on natural springs up until then.
Over this time period, there were only 2 other systems capable of offering water to higher areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which amassed rainwater. To provide water to Pincian Hill in the early sixteenth century, they employed the emerging technique of redirecting the current from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Whilst these manholes were manufactured to make it less difficult to manage the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use containers to remove water from the channel, which was employed by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he invested in the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. Apparently, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t sufficient to meet his needs. Through an opening to the aqueduct that flowed under his property, he was in a position to reach his water wants.
