Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct founded in Rome, started out delivering the men and women living in the hills with water in 273 BC, although they had depended on natural springs up until then. If inhabitants residing at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to count on the other existing technologies of the day, cisterns that accumulated rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from below ground. To offer water to Pincian Hill in the early sixteenth century, they applied the new process of redirecting the motion from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network. Spanning the length of the aqueduct’s route were pozzi, or manholes, that gave entry. Even though they were initially designed to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started using the manholes to get water from the channel, commencing when he bought the property in 1543. The cistern he had made to gather rainwater wasn’t sufficient to meet his water specifications. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran below his residence.
