The Main Characteristics of Ancient Greek Sculpture
The Main Characteristics of Ancient Greek Sculpture The Archaic Greeks manufactured the 1st freestanding statuary, an impressive achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Younger, ideal male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the sculptures, or kouros figures. The kouroi, viewed by the Greeks to symbolize beauty, had one foot extended out of a strict forward-facing pose and the male statues were always unclothed, with a compelling, strong physique. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. A huge period of improvement for the Greeks, the Archaic period introduced about newer forms of state, expressions of artwork, and a greater appreciation of people and customs outside of Greece. Conflicts like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars among city-states are suggestive of the disruptive nature of the time, which was similar to other periods of historical disturbance. However, these conflicts did not significantly hinder the advancement of the Greek civilization.
Bernini's Water Fountains
Bernini's Water Fountains There are countless celebrated fountains in the city center of Rome. One of the most distinguished sculptors and artists of the 17th century, nearly all of them were planned, conceived and built by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Also a city builder, he had capabilities as a water feature developer, and marks of his life's work are obvious throughout the avenues of Rome. A renowned Florentine sculptor, Bernini's father mentored his young son, and they eventually moved to Rome to fully showcase their artwork, mainly in the form of public water features and water fountains. An exemplary workman, Bernin earned encouragement and the the backing of popes and well known artists. He was originally renowned for his sculpture. An authority in historical Greek engineering, he used this knowledge as a platform and melded it gracefully with Roman marble, most notably in the Vatican. He was affected by many great artists, however, Michelangelo had the biggest effect on his work.
