Archaic Greek Artistry: Garden Statuary The Archaic Greeks built the first freestanding statuary, an impressive achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. Symbolizing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were made to appear stiff and commonly had foot forward; the males were healthy, strong, and naked.
Around 650 BC, life-sized versions of the kouroi began to be seen. The Archaic period was turbulent for the Greeks as they progressed into more sophisticated forms of government and art, and obtained more information about the peoples and societies outside of Greece.
