The kouroi, considered by the Greeks to represent beauty, had one foot stretched out of a rigid forward-facing posture and the male statues were regularly undressed, with a compelling, powerful build. In 650 BC, life-size variations of the kouroi began to be seen. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they progressed into more refined forms of government and art, and gained more information about the peoples and civilizations outside of Greece. During this time and other periods of historical tumultuousness, encounters often took place, including battles fought between city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan infiltration of Samos.
