Back Story of Outdoor Fountains

Back Story Outdoor Fountains 136401071171519.jpg Back Story of Outdoor Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, reigned the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classical Greek documents into Latin. He undertook the beautification of Rome to make it into the worthy seat of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the rebuilding of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. The ancient Roman custom of building an awe-inspiring commemorative fountain at the point where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was resurrected by Nicholas V. The present-day location of the Trevi Fountain was once occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and constructed by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. The Trevi Fountain as well as the well-known baroque fountains located in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the modified aqueduct he had reconstructed.

A Layman's Guide to Hydrostatics

Layman's Guide Hydrostatics 66108989659.jpg A Layman's Guide to Hydrostatics When in equilibrium, liquid delivers force to its container or any other material it comes in contact with. There are two forms, hydrostatic load or external forces. When pressing against a level wall, the fluid applies equal force at different points on the wall. All points on an object’s surface are affected by vertical pressure when the object is entirely submerged in a liquid that’s in a state of equilibrium. This applied force is known as buoyancy, while the notion itself is known as Archimedes’ principle. When hydrostatic force is applied on an area of liquid, this will become hydrostatic pressure. The containers that make up a city’s fountains, wells, and its water supply system are applications of these concepts.

The Public Water Fountains

Public Water Fountains 728656571481.jpg The Public Water Fountains As originally developed, water fountains were designed to be practical, guiding water from streams or reservoirs to the residents of towns and villages, where the water could be used for cooking food, cleaning, and drinking. To generate water flow through a fountain until the later part of the 1800’s, and generate a jet of water, required the force of gravity and a water source such as a creek or reservoir, located higher than the fountain. Inspirational and impressive, large water fountains have been built as monuments in many societies. The common fountains of modern times bear little similarity to the first water fountains. The first accepted water fountain was a stone basin carved that served as a receptacle for drinking water and ceremonial purposes. 2000 B.C. is when the oldest identified stone fountain basins were actually used. The spraying of water appearing from small jets was forced by gravity, the lone power source designers had in those days. Situated near aqueducts or creeks, the functional public water fountains supplied the local citizens with fresh drinking water. Creatures, Gods, and Spiritual figures dominated the very early decorative Roman fountains, beginning to show up in about 6 B.C.. The people of Rome had an intricate system of aqueducts that supplied the water for the many fountains that were situated throughout the urban center.
