Archaic Greek Artwork: Outdoor Statuary

Archaic Greek Artwork: Outdoor Statuary 48970736025.jpg Archaic Greek Artwork: Outdoor Statuary The primitive Greeks developed the first freestanding statuary, an awesome achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Kouros figures, sculptures of young, handsome male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the bulk of the sculptures. The kouroi were believed by the Greeks to typify beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, sinewy, and unclothed. In 650 BC, life-sized versions of the kouroi began to be seen. Throughout the Archaic period, a great time of changes, the Greeks were developing new sorts of government, expressions of art, and a larger understanding of people and cultures outside Greece. Throughout this time and other periods of historical tumultuousness, encounters often happened, among them wars fought between city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan invasion of Samos.
