Rome’s Ingenious Water Transport Systems Prior to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in Rome, citizens who resided on hills had to journey even further down to gather their water from natural sources. He didn’t get sufficient water from the cistern that he had constructed on his property to collect rainwater.
To provide himself with a much more effective system to gather water, he had one of the manholes exposed, giving him access to the aqueduct below his property.
