From Where Did Water Features Originate?
From Where Did Water Features Originate? The translation of hundreds of classic Greek documents into Latin was commissioned by the scholarly Pope Nicholas V who led the Church in Rome from 1397 until 1455. He undertook the beautification of Rome to make it into the worthy capital of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope instigated the reconstruction of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. A mostra, a monumental commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to mark the point of arrival of an aqueduct, was a practice which was restored by Nicholas V. At the behest of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti began the construction of a wall fountain in the spot where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The water which eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain as well as the renown baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona came from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.
The Outdoor Water Fountains
The Outdoor Water Fountains Water fountains were at first practical in purpose, used to bring water from canals or springs to cities and hamlets, providing the inhabitants with fresh water to drink, bathe, and cook with. A supply of water higher in elevation than the fountain was required to pressurize the movement and send water spraying from the fountain's spout, a technology without equal until the late 19th century.
Striking and spectacular, big water fountains have been designed as monuments in most cultures. If you saw the first fountains, you wouldn't recognize them as fountains. Simple stone basins created from nearby stone were the original fountains, used for spiritual functions and drinking water. 2,000 BC is when the oldest known stone fountain basins were originally used. The spraying of water emerging from small spouts was pressured by gravity, the sole power source designers had in those days. The location of the fountains was determined by the water source, which is why you’ll normally find them along reservoirs, canals, or streams. The Romans began building ornate fountains in 6 BC, most of which were metallic or stone masks of creatures and mythological representations. The impressive aqueducts of Rome supplied water to the eye-catching public fountains, many of which you can visit today.
