California's Outdoor Fountains Analysis and Results The 1st US city to pass a tax on sugary drinks was Berkley, California in February 2014. By taxing sugary drinks, the city hopes to motivate more people to decide on healthier options, such as water. Research was completed to ensure that citizens of all races and economic classes had access to thoroughly clean, working drinking fountains. Facts on the city’s drinking water fountains were developed using a GPS created exclusively for the research. Analysts then used US Census data to find out even more about the economic and racial issues that affected the city. The 2 data sets were compared to determine what class disparities, if any, there were in access to operating water fountains.
The research was able to pinpoint the demographics of areas with water fountains, also observing whether the shape of the fountains was better or inferior in lower class neighborhoods. While the bulk of the fountains were in working order, an astonishing number were found to be in a bad state of repairs.
