Prior to 273, when the 1st elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was constructed in Rome, inhabitants who lived on hillsides had to journey further down to gather their water from natural sources. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the only technological innovations available at the time to supply water to spots of greater elevation. In the very early 16th century, the city began to use the water that flowed below the ground through Acqua Vergine to supply water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. The manholes made it easier to maintain the channel, but it was also achievable to use buckets to pull water from the aqueduct, as we saw with Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi when he owned the property from 1543 to 1552, the year he passed away. Even though the cardinal also had a cistern to amass rainwater, it didn’t produce sufficient water. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran underneath his residence.
