Where did Landscape Fountains Begin?

Landscape Fountains Begin? 735995770.jpg Where did Landscape Fountains Begin? The incredible construction of a fountain allows it to provide clean water or shoot water high into air for dramatic effect and it can also serve as an excellent design feature to complete your home.

The primary purpose of a fountain was originally strictly practical. Residents of cities, townships and small towns utilized them as a source of drinking water and a place to wash up, which meant that fountains needed to be connected to nearby aqueduct or spring. Up until the nineteenth, fountains had to be higher and closer to a water source, including aqueducts and reservoirs, in order to benefit from gravity which fed the fountains. Artists thought of fountains as wonderful additions to a living space, however, the fountains also served to provide clean water and honor the designer responsible for creating it. The main components used by the Romans to create their fountains were bronze or stone masks, mostly illustrating animals or heroes. Muslims and Moorish landscaping designers of the Middle Ages included fountains to re-create smaller models of the gardens of paradise. To show his dominance over nature, French King Louis XIV included fountains in the Garden of Versailles. Seventeen and 18 century Popes sought to exalt their positions by adding decorative baroque-style fountains at the point where restored Roman aqueducts arrived into the city.

Since indoor plumbing became the standard of the day for fresh, drinking water, by the end of the 19th century urban fountains were no longer needed for this purpose and they became purely decorative. Fountains using mechanical pumps instead of gravity allowed fountains to bring recycled water into living spaces as well as create special water effects.

Modern-day fountains serve mostly as decoration for community spaces, to honor individuals or events, and compliment entertainment and recreational gatherings.

Anglo Saxon Grounds During the Norman Conquest

Anglo Saxon Grounds During the Norman Conquest Anglo-Saxons encountered extraordinary adjustments to their day-to-day lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans.Anglo Saxon Grounds Norman Conquest 2233245576544384.jpg Engineering and horticulture were abilities that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. However, there was no time for home life, domesticated design, and decoration until the Normans had conquered the whole region. Most often built upon windy peaks, castles were fundamental constructs that permitted their inhabitants to spend time and space to offensive and defensive schemes, while monasteries were rambling stone buildings frequently added in only the most fecund, broad valleys. The calm method of gardening was not viable in these dreary bastions. Berkeley Castle, potentially the most unspoiled model of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists now. The keep is reported to have been conceived during the time of William the Conqueror. A significant terrace serves as a hindrance to intruders who would attempt to mine the walls of the building. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an ancient yew hedge trimmed into the form of crude battlements.
