The City Of Rome, Gian Bernini, And Fountains In Rome’s city center, there are countless easily recognized water fountains. Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of the most brilliant sculptors and artists of the 17th century planned, conceived and constructed virtually all of them. Also a city architect, he had capabilities as a fountain designer, and remnants of his life's work are evident throughout the avenues of Rome.
To totally express their artwork, mainly in the form of public water features and water fountains, Bernini's father, a celebrated Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son, and they ultimately moved in Rome. The young Bernini was an exemplary employee and won encouragement and patronage of significant artists as well as popes. At the beginning he was known for his sculptural expertise. An expert in historical Greek engineering, he used this knowledge as a base and melded it seamlessly with Roman marble, most remarkably in the Vatican. Though he was influenced by many, Michelangelo had the most serious effect on him, both personally and professionally.

Archaic Greeks were well known for developing the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were constructed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Youthful, ideal male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the sculptures, or kouros figures. The kouroi, viewed by the Greeks to symbolize beauty, had one foot extended out of a fixed forward-facing posture and the male figurines were regularly nude, with a strong, powerful physique. In 650 BC, life-sized forms of the kouroi began to be seen. The Archaic period was turbulent for the Greeks as they evolved into more polished forms of government and art, and gained more information about the peoples and cultures outside of Greece. The Arcadian battles, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars between city-states are instances of the kinds of conflicts that emerged frequently, which is consistent with other times of historical transformation.
Although the mechanism made by Agrippa for carrying water gained the admiration of Andrea Bacci in 1588, it appeared to disappear not very long after.It may be that the Acqua Felice, the second of Rome’s earliest modern conduits made the unit outdated when it was connected to the Villa Medici in 1592....
