Agrippa’s Intriguing Water-lifting Machine

Agrippa’s Intriguing Water-lifting Machine Unfortunately, Agrippa’s great plan for raising water wasn’t discussed a lot following 1588, when Andrea Bacci praised it publicly. It may be that the Acqua Felice, the second of Rome’s early modern aqueducts made the system useless when it was connected to the Villa Medici in 1592. Its triumph might have been temporary but the device conceived by Camillo Agrippa was still different from anything designed in Italy during the time frame which split the modern age from ancient Rome. While there were various other important water-driven designs either projected or built during the later part of the sixteenth century, including scenographic water displays, giochi d’acqua or water caprices, and melodious water features, none was fed by water like Agrippa’s technology.

From the onset, outdoor fountains were soley there to serve as functional elements. Residents of urban areas, townships and small towns utilized them as a source of drinking water and a place to wash up, which meant that fountains had to be connected to nearby aqueduct or spring. Until the late 19th, century most water fountains functioned using gravity to allow water to flow or jet into the air, therefore, they needed a supply of water such as a reservoir or aqueduct located higher than the fountain. Artists thought of fountains as wonderful additions to a living space, however, the fountains also served to provide clean water and honor the designer responsible for building it. Bronze or stone masks of wildlife and heroes were frequently seen on Roman fountains. To replicate the gardens of paradise, Muslim and Moorish garden planners of the Middle Ages introduced fountains to their designs. King Louis XIV of France wanted to demonstrate his superiority over nature by including fountains in the Gardens of Versailles. The Popes of the 17th and 18th centuries were extolled with baroque style fountains made to mark the place of entry of Roman aqueducts.

Since indoor plumbing became the norm of the day for fresh, drinking water, by the end of the 19th century urban fountains were no longer needed for this purpose and they became purely ornamental. Gravity was replaced by mechanical pumps in order to enable fountains to bring in clean water and allow for amazing water displays.

These days, fountains decorate public areas and are used to honor individuals or events and fill recreational and entertainment needs.
