Rome’s First Water Transport Systems

Rome’s First Water Transport Systems With the building of the 1st elevated aqueduct in Rome, the Aqua Anio Vetus in 273 BC, folks who lived on the city’s hillsides no longer had to depend exclusively on naturally-occurring spring water for their requirements. During this time period, there were only two other techniques capable of delivering water to elevated areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which amassed rainwater. To furnish water to Pincian Hill in the early 16th century, they applied the emerging tactic of redirecting the flow from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network. The aqueduct’s channel was made reachable by pozzi, or manholes, that were placed along its length when it was 1st constructed. During the roughly 9 years he had the residence, from 1543 to 1552, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi used these manholes to take water from the channel in containers, though they were originally designed for the intent of cleaning and maintenance the aqueduct. It appears that, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t enough to satisfy his needs. Fortunately, the aqueduct sat directly below his property, and he had a shaft opened to give him access.

Its success might have been short but the unit invented by Camillo Agrippa was still not like anything developed in Italy during the period that separated the contemporary age from early Rome. It could defy gravitation to raise water to Renaissance landscapes, providing them in a way other late 16th century designs like scenographic water exhibits, musical water fountains and giochi d’acqua or water caprices, were not.
