Keep Your Large Outdoor Fountain Clean Adequate care and regular cleaning are important to the longevity of water fountains. Leaves, twigs, and insects very often find their way into fountains, so it is vital to keep yours free from such things. On top of that, algae can be a problem, as sunshine hitting the water permits it to form easily.
Stir hydrogen peroxide, sea salt, or vinegar into the water to avoid this particular problem. Another option is to stir bleach into the water, but this action can sicken wild animals and so should really be avoided. An extensive cleaning every three-four months is ideal for garden fountains. Before you start cleaning, all the water must be eliminated. Next use mild soap and a soft sponge to clean inside the reservoir. If there is intricate artwork, you might need to use a toothbrush for those hard-to-reach areas. Any soap residue that remains on your fountain can harm it, so be sure it is all rinsed off.
Make sure you get rid of any calcium or plankton by taking the pump apart and cleaning the inside thoroughly. You might want to let it soak in vinegar for a few hours to make it easier to clean. If you want to eliminate build-up in your fountain, use rain water or mineral water rather than tap water, as these don’t contain any ingredients that might stick to the inside of the pump.
Lastly, make sure your fountain is always full by checking it every day - this will keep it in tip-top condition. Allowing the water level to get too low can cause damage to the pump - and you certainly do not want that!
