Modern Garden Decoration: Outdoor Fountains and their Beginnings

Modern Garden Decoration: Outdoor Fountains and their Beginnings A fountain, an incredible piece of engineering, not only supplies drinking water as it pours into a basin, it can also launch water high into the air for an extraordinary effect.

The central purpose of a fountain was originally strictly practical. Inhabitants of cities, townships and small towns utilized them as a source of drinking water and a place to wash up, which meant that fountains needed to be connected to nearby aqueduct or spring. Used until the 19th century, in order for fountains to flow or shoot up into the air, their origin of water such as reservoirs or aqueducts, had to be higher than the water fountain in order to benefit from gravity. Fountains were not only used as a water source for drinking water, but also to adorn homes and celebrate the artist who created it. Roman fountains usually depicted imagery of animals or heroes made of metal or stone masks. During the Middle Ages, Muslim and Moorish garden planners incorporated fountains to create mini depictions of the gardens of paradise. The fountains seen in the Gardens of Versailles were meant to show the power over nature held by King Louis XIV of France. To mark the entryway of the restored Roman aqueducts, the Popes of the 17th and 18th centuries commissioned the building of baroque style fountains in the spot where the aqueducts entered the city of RomeModern Garden Decoration: Outdoor Fountains Beginnings 24000952.jpg

Urban fountains built at the end of the 19th century served only as decorative and celebratory ornaments since indoor plumbing provided the essential drinking water. Impressive water effects and recycled water were made possible by replacing the power of gravity with mechanical pumps.

Beautifying city parks, honoring people or events and entertaining, are some of the purposes of modern-day fountains.

Younger, ideal male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the sculptures, or kouros figures. The kouroi, viewed by the Greeks to portray beauty, had one foot extended out of a rigid forward-facing pose and the male statues were always undressed, with a strong, sturdy build. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. A significant age of modification for the Greeks, the Archaic period helped bring about newer forms of state, expressions of artwork, and a greater comprehension of people and cultures outside of Greece. However, the Greek civilization was not slowed down by these battles.
