The Role of Hydrostatics In The Design Of Garden Fountains
The Role of Hydrostatics In The Design Of Garden Fountains
When in equilibrium, liquid applies power to its container or any other material it comes in contact with. These fall into two categories, hydrostatic load or outside force. The pressure applied by the liquid against a level wall is identical at each point where it makes contact with the wall. Liquid in equilibrium will apply vertical pressure at every point of an object’s exterior when that object is fully submersed in the liquid. We refer to this concept as Archimedes’ principle, which deals with the forces of buoyancy. Liquid acted on by hydrostatic force is then subject to hydrostatic pressure at the point of contact. A city’s water supply system, fountains, and artesian wells are all illustrations of the application of these principles on containers.
When and Where Did Water Features Emerge?
When and Where Did Water Features Emerge? The translation of hundreds of classic Greek documents into Latin was commissioned by the scholarly Pope Nicholas V who led the Church in Rome from 1397 until 1455. Embellishing Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the center of his objectives.
In 1453 the Pope commissioned the reconstruction of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. Building a mostra, an imposing celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the arrival point of an aqueduct, was a tradition revived by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the area formerly filled with a wall fountain built by Leon Battista Albert, an architect commissioned by the Pope. The Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains located in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the modified aqueduct he had reconstructed.
