The Defining Characteristics of Classic Greek Statues

The Defining Characteristics of Classic Greek Statues Archaic Greeks were renowned for creating the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were constructed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi, viewed as by the Greeks to portray beauty, had one foot stretched out of a strict forward-facing pose and the male figurines were regularly undressed, with a compelling, sturdy build. In about 650 BC, the variations of the kouroi became life-sized. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they evolved into more polished forms of government and art, and obtained more data about the peoples and civilizations outside of Greece. The Arcadian conflicts, the Spartan penetration of Samos, and other wars between city-states are instances of the types of conflicts that emerged frequently, which is consistent with other times of historical transformation.

He undertook the embellishment of Rome to make it into the worthy seat of the Christian world. Restoration of the Acqua Vergine, a desolate Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the bidding of the Pope. The ancient Roman tradition of marking the arrival point of an aqueduct with an imposing celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to build a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had reconditioned included modifications and extensions which eventually enabled it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.
