Anglo-Saxon Landscapes at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Anglo-Saxon Landscapes at the Time of the Norman Conquest The arrival of the Normans in the later half of the eleventh century greatly altered The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. The ability of the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons' in architecture and agriculture at the time of the conquest. But yet there was no time for home life, domestic design, and decoration until the Normans had conquered the whole realm. Because of this, castles were cruder structures than monasteries: Monasteries were often immense stone buildings located in the biggest and most fecund valleys, while castles were erected on windy crests where their residents dedicated time and space to projects for offense and defense. The tranquil method of gardening was impractical in these dreary bastions. Berkeley Castle, maybe the most pristine style of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists today. The keep is reported to have been created during the time of William the Conqueror. A spacious terrace recommended for exercising and as a way to stop attackers from mining under the walls runs about the building.Anglo-Saxon Landscapes Time Norman Conquest 4484627466.jpg On one of these parapets is a picturesque bowling green covered in grass and enclosed by an aged hedge of yew that has been designed into coarse battlements.
