Rome’s First Water Delivery Solutions

Rome’s First Water Delivery Solutions Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct founded in Rome, commenced supplying the men and women living in the hills with water in 273 BC, though they had relied on natural springs up until then. When aqueducts or springs weren’t available, people dwelling at raised elevations turned to water removed from underground or rainwater, which was made possible by wells and cisterns. In the very early 16th century, the city began to use the water that ran beneath the earth through Acqua Vergine to deliver drinking water to Pincian Hill.Rome’s First Water Delivery Solutions 566674793221959.jpg As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Although they were primarily planned to make it possible to service the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi began using the manholes to accumulate water from the channel, starting when he obtained the property in 1543. It appears that, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t good enough to fulfill his needs. That is when he decided to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran directly below his property.
