Acqua Vergine: The Remedy to Rome's Water Problems
Rome’s 1st elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, inhabitants residing at higher elevations had to depend on local creeks for their water. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the sole techniques around at the time to supply water to areas of high elevation. In the very early sixteenth century, the city began to utilize the water that ran below ground through Acqua Vergine to supply water to Pincian Hill. Pozzi, or manholes, were constructed at standard stretches along the aqueduct’s channel. Whilst these manholes were developed to make it less difficult to preserve the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use containers to extract water from the channel, which was exercised by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he obtained the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Even though the cardinal also had a cistern to get rainwater, it couldn't supply enough water. Thankfully, the aqueduct sat directly below his property, and he had a shaft opened to give him accessibility.
