For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of young and desirable male or female (kore) Greeks. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were made to look rigid and commonly had foot forward; the males were healthy, strong, and nude. The kouroi became life-sized starting in 650 BC. A massive period of improvement for the Greeks, the Archaic period introduced about newer forms of state, expressions of artwork, and a higher comprehension of people and cultures outside of Greece. Nonetheless, the Greek civilization was not slowed down by these battles.

Himself a learned man, Pope Nicholas V headed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of scores of age-old documents from their original Greek into Latin. It was imperative for him to embellish the city of Rome to make it worthy of being called the capital of the Christian world. Restoration of the Acqua Vergine, a ruined Roman aqueduct which had transported fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the behest of the Pope. The ancient Roman custom of marking the entry point of an aqueduct with an imposing celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was directed by the Pope to put up a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains located in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the altered aqueduct he had rebuilt.
