The barren fortresses did not provide for the peaceful avocation of farming. Berkeley Castle is possibly the most intact model in existence today of the early Anglo-Norman form of architecture. The keep is said to date from the time of William the Conqueror. A big terrace intended for exercising and as a way to stop attackers from mining under the walls runs around the building. On one of these parapets is a picturesque bowling green covered in grass and enclosed by an aged hedge of yew that has been designed into coarse battlements.
