Water Transport Strategies in Ancient Rome Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct assembled in Rome, started out delivering the many people living in the hills with water in 273 BC, although they had relied on natural springs up until then.
Over this period, there were only two other systems capable of delivering water to elevated areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which gathered rainwater. Beginning in the sixteenth century, a unique approach was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean segments to generate water to Pincian Hill. Spanning the length of the aqueduct’s network were pozzi, or manholes, that gave access. Whilst these manholes were manufactured to make it less difficult to preserve the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use buckets to remove water from the channel, which was carried out by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he bought the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. The cistern he had made to gather rainwater wasn’t satisfactory to meet his water requirements. Thankfully, the aqueduct sat below his residence, and he had a shaft established to give him access.

The fact that the fountains were functioning was not a guarantee that they were well-maintained, considering quite a few were in need of maintenance and repair.
