Water fountain designers were multi-talented individuals from the 16th to the later part of the 18th century, often serving as architects, sculptors, artists, engineers and cultivated scholars all in one. Leonardo da Vinci, a Renaissance artist, was renowned as a ingenious intellect, inventor and scientific expert. He methodically reported his examinations in his now famed notebooks about his research into the forces of nature and the attributes and movement of water. Early Italian water feature engineers transformed private villa configurations into inspiring water displays full with symbolic meaning and natural charm by coupling creativity with hydraulic and horticultural experience. The humanist Pirro Ligorio, celebrated for his virtuosity in archeology, architecture and garden design, provided the vision behind the wonders in Tivoli. Other water feature engineers, masterminding the extraordinary water marbles, water functions and water antics for the many domains in the vicinity of Florence, were tried and tested in humanist subject areas and classical scientific texts.

Acqua Vergine: The Solution to Rome's Water Troubles Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct built in Rome, commenced providing the many people living in the hills with water in 273 BC, although they had counted on natural springs up until then.
Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the sole techniques around at the time to supply water to segments of high elevation. Beginning in the sixteenth century, a brand new system was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sectors to supply water to Pincian Hill. Through its initial building and construction, pozzi (or manholes) were located at set intervals alongside the aqueduct’s channel. Whilst these manholes were developed to make it simpler and easier to manage the aqueduct, it was also possible to use buckets to pull water from the channel, which was utilized by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he purchased the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. It appears that, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t adequate to fulfill his needs. To provide himself with a more useful system to assemble water, he had one of the manholes opened, providing him access to the aqueduct below his property.
