Agrippa's Eye-popping, but Mostly Forgotten Water-Lifting Mechanism
Agrippa's Eye-popping, but Mostly Forgotten Water-Lifting Mechanism The praise Agrippa’s water-lifting innovation earned by Andrea Bacci in 1588 was temporary. It may be that the Acqua Felice, the second of Rome’s initial modern conduits made the unit useless when it was connected to the Villa Medici in 1592. This becomes all the more heartbreaking given how spectacular Camillo Agrippa’s system was, entirely unique in Italy during the hundreds of years that passed between the decline of ancient Rome and the current period. Although there were various other worthwhile water-driven concepts either designed or built during the latter part of the sixteenth century, like scenographic water presentations, giochi d’acqua or water caprices, and melodious water fountains, not one was fed by water like Agrippa’s technology.
The History of Landscape Fountains
The History of Landscape Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, governed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of old classic Greek texts into Latin. Embellishing Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the heart of his ambitions.
At the bidding of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a ruined aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was restored starting in 1453. A mostra, a monumental celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to mark the point of entry of an aqueduct, was a tradition which was revived by Nicholas V. The present-day location of the Trevi Fountain was once occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and built by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. Changes and extensions, included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
