Agrippa’s Splendid Water-lifting Machine

Agrippa’s Splendid Water-lifting Machine In 1588, Agrippa’s water-lifting invention captivated the interest and approval of Andrea Bacci but that turned out to be one of the last references of the mechanism. Merely years later, in 1592, the early modern Roman waterway, the Acqua Felice, was connected to the Medici’s villa, perhaps making the device outdated. In reality it was perhaps merely abandoned when Ferdinando went to Florence in 1588 soon after the expiry of his brother, Francesco di Medici, leading Ferdinando to give up his position as a cardinal in order to lock in his place as the upcoming Grand Duke of Tuscany. Renaissance landscapes of the late sixteenth century were home to works including melodious water features, scenographic water exhibits and water caprices (giochi d’acqua), but these weren’t outfitted with water in ways that defied gravitation itself.

The First Contemporary Wall Fountains

The First Contemporary Wall Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a well educated man, ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classical Greek documents into Latin. It was imperative for him to beautify the city of Rome to make it worthy of being called the capital of the Christian world. Beginning in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent repair at the behest of the Pope. Building a mostra, a grandiose commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a tradition revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to construct a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. Modifications and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
