If people living at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to count on the remaining existing technologies of the day, cisterns that gathered rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from under ground. In the very early sixteenth century, the city began to use the water that ran beneath the earth through Acqua Vergine to deliver water to Pincian Hill. Through its original construction, pozzi (or manholes) were installed at set intervals alongside the aqueduct’s channel. While these manholes were created to make it simpler and easier to manage the aqueduct, it was also possible to use buckets to pull water from the channel, which was practiced by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he bought the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. The cistern he had constructed to obtain rainwater wasn’t sufficient to meet his water requirements. Fortunately, the aqueduct sat directly below his property, and he had a shaft opened to give him accessibility.
