Anglo-Saxon Gardens During the Norman Conquest

Anglo-Saxon Gardens Norman Conquest 97547997399.jpg Anglo-Saxon Gardens During the Norman Conquest The advent of the Normans in the later half of the 11th century significantly altered The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. Engineering and gardening were skills that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. However, there was no time for home life, domesticated architecture, and decoration until the Normans had overcome the whole region. Castles were more basic constructions and often erected on blustery hills, where their people spent both time and space to exercising offense and defense, while monasteries were large stone buildings, commonly positioned in the widest, most fertile hollows. Relaxing pastimes such as gardening were out of place in these destitute citadels. Berkeley Castle, perhaps the most pristine model of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists today. It is said that the keep was developed during William the Conqueror's time. A large terrace intended for walking and as a way to stop attackers from mining under the walls runs about the building. A scenic bowling green, covered in grass and bordered by battlements clipped out of an ancient yew hedge, makes one of the terraces.

The Main Characteristics of Classic Greek Sculpture

The Main Characteristics of Classic Greek Sculpture The primitive Greeks manufactured the very first freestanding statuary, an amazing achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Youthful, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the sculptures, or kouros figures. The kouroi, viewed by the Greeks to portray beauty, had one foot stretched out of a fixed forward-facing pose and the male statues were regularly nude, with a strong, sturdy shape. In around 650 BC, the differences of the kouroi became life-sized. The Archaic period was an extraordinary time of change for the Greeks as they expanded into new forms of government, created novel expressions of art, and gained information of the people and cultures outside of Greece.Main Characteristics Classic Greek Sculpture 064327083554.jpg However, the Greek civilization was not slowed down by these fights.
