A Simple Explanation of Hydrostatics When in equilibrium, liquid delivers energy to its container or any other material it comes in contact with. The force applied falls into one of two categories: external force or hydrostatic energy. When pushing against a level wall, the fluid applies equal force at various points on the wall. All points on an object’s exterior are affected by vertical pressure when the object is completely submerged in a liquid that’s in a state of equilibrium. We refer to this concept as Archimedes’ principle, which deals with the forces of buoyancy. When hydrostatic force is exerted on an area of liquid, this becomes hydrostatic pressure. In February 2014, a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages was passed in Berkley, CA, making it the first city in the United States to create such a law. By taxing sugary drinks, the city hopes to encourage a lot more people to select healthier choices, such as water. Research was conducted to find out the status of local drinking water fountains and whether individuals from other racial or financial backgrounds had less availability to them. Important information on the city’s drinking water fountains were developed using a GPS created specifically for the research. Demographic data on race and income was then assembled using the US Census database. Comparisons were made amongst the location and demographic data, revealing whether class differences affected availability to clean, working water fountains. The study was able to identify the demographics of areas with water fountains, also noting whether the shape of the fountains was better or worse in lower class neighborhoods. While the greater part of the fountains were in working order, an alarming number were found to be in a poor state of repairs.
