Water-raising Tool by Camillo Agrippa
Water-raising Tool by Camillo Agrippa In 1588, Agrippa’s water-lifting invention attracted the notice and admiration of Andrea Bacci but that turned out to be one of the last references of the device.
Just years later, in 1592, the early contemporary Roman waterway, the Acqua Felice, was linked to the Medici’s villa, possibly making the device outmoded. Though its glory was temporary, Camillo Agrippa’s layout for raising water was the wonder of its day, exceeding everything created in Italy since the days of ancient Rome. It could defy gravitation to raise water to Renaissance landscapes, supplying them in a way other late sixteenth century designs like scenographic water exhibits, melodious fountains and giochi d’acqua or water caprices, were not.
"Old School" Fountain Designers
"Old School" Fountain Designers Water feature designers were multi-talented people from the 16th to the later part of the 18th century, often serving as architects, sculptors, artists, engineers and cultivated scholars all in one person.
Leonardo da Vinci as a creative genius, inventor and scientific virtuoso exemplified this Renaissance creator. He carefully noted his ideas in his currently renowned notebooks, after his mind boggling fascination in the forces of nature led him to research the attributes and movement of water. Combining imaginativeness with hydraulic and gardening expertise, early Italian water fountain engineers transformed private villa settings into innovative water exhibits complete with emblematic meaning and natural charm. The humanist Pirro Ligorio, renowned for his virtuosity in archeology, architecture and garden design, offered the vision behind the wonders in Tivoli. Well versed in humanistic subjects as well as established scientific texts, some other water feature designers were masterminding the excellent water marbles, water attributes and water jokes for the countless mansions around Florence.
