Berkley, CA residents voted for a sugar-sweetened beverages tax in February 2014, the first of its kind in the United States. The goal is to have people drinking more water and other natural drinks by elevating the price tag of soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks. Research was carried out to make sure that people of all races and economic classes had access to clean, operating drinking fountains. The research utilized a GPS app to collect data on current water fountains in the city. The US Census Community Study database was used to collect information relating to race and economic status in these locations. Comparisons were made between the location and demographic data, disclosing whether class differences affected access to clean, functional water fountains. The surrounding demographics of each water fountain location was made note of, while also determining whether race or income levels made a huge difference in the state of repair of each fountain. While the greater part of the fountains were in working order, an escalating quantity were revealed to be in a poor state of repairs.
