Aqueducts: The Answer to Rome's Water Challenges With the construction of the very first raised aqueduct in Rome, the Aqua Anio Vetus in 273 BC, people who lived on the city’s hills no longer had to depend entirely on naturally-occurring spring water for their requirements. When aqueducts or springs weren’t accessible, people living at raised elevations turned to water pulled from underground or rainwater, which was made available by wells and cisterns. In the early sixteenth century, the city began to use the water that ran beneath the earth through Acqua Vergine to provide drinking water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Whilst these manholes were created to make it simpler and easier to manage the aqueduct, it was also possible to use buckets to remove water from the channel, which was done by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he purchased the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552.
