"Primitive" Greek Artwork: Outdoor Statuary Up until the Archaic Greeks created the first freestanding statuary, a noteworthy triumph, carvings had largely been accomplished in walls and pillars as reliefs. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the area formerly filled with a wall fountain crafted by Leon Battista Albert, an architect commissioned by the Pope. Modifications and extensions, included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
