Classic Greece: The Inception of Outdoor Statue Design
Classic Greece: The Inception of Outdoor Statue Design
Nearly all sculptors were paid by the temples to accentuate the intricate pillars and archways with renderings of the gods right up until the time period came to a close and many Greeks started to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred, when it became more common for sculptors to portray ordinary people as well. Portraiture came to be commonplace as well, and would be welcomed by the Romans when they defeated the Greeks, and on occasion well-off households would order a depiction of their progenitors to be put inside their huge familial tombs. A point of artistic progression, the use of sculpture and other art forms morphed throughout the Greek Classical period, so it is inexact to say that the arts provided only one function. Greek sculpture was actually a cutting-edge component of antiquity, whether the reason was religious fervor or visual satisfaction, and its modern excellence may be what endears it to us now.
The Beginnings of Modern Wall Fountains
The Beginnings of Modern Wall Fountains Hundreds of classic Greek texts were translated into Latin under the authority of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. Beautifying Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the core of his ambitions. Restoration of the Acqua Vergine, a ruined Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the behest of the Pope. A mostra, a monumental dedicatory fountain constructed by ancient Romans to mark the point of arrival of an aqueduct, was a custom which was revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to put up a wall fountain where we now see the Trevi Fountain. The water which eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona came from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.
