The Root of Contemporary Outdoor Wall Fountains
The Root of Contemporary Outdoor Wall Fountains
Hundreds of ancient Greek texts were translated into Latin under the auspices of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. It was important for him to embellish the city of Rome to make it worthy of being known as the capital of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope instigated the reconstruction of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. Building a mostra, a grandiose celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a tradition revived by Nicholas V. At the bidding of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti began the construction of a wall fountain in the place where we now find the Trevi Fountain. Adjustments and extensions, included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.

Builders of the First Garden Fountains Water fountain designers were multi-talented individuals from the 16th to the late 18th century, often serving as architects, sculptors, artisans, engineers and cultivated scholars all in one. Leonardo da Vinci as a creative intellect, inventor and scientific expert exemplified this Renaissance creator. With his immense curiosity about the forces of nature, he investigated the attributes and mobility of water and also systematically recorded his examinations in his now famed notebooks. Innovative water exhibits loaded with symbolic meaning and natural grace transformed private villa settings when early Italian fountain creators paired creativity with hydraulic and landscaping abilities. The humanist Pirro Ligorio offered the vision behind the splendors in Tivoli and was distinguished for his abilities in archeology, architecture and garden design. Well versed in humanistic themes as well as classical scientific readings, some other water feature designers were masterminding the extraordinary water marbles, water functions and water antics for the various lands near Florence.
The circulated papers and illustrated publications of the day contributed to the development of scientific technology, and were the primary means of spreading useful hydraulic information and fountain suggestions all through Europe....
