Keeping Your Landscape Fountain Tidy
No more than three-four months should really go by without an extensive cleaning of a fountain. Before you can start cleaning it you should drain out all of the water. When you have done this, wash inside the water reservoir with a gentle detergent. A useful tip is to use a toothbrush if there are little hard-to-reach spots. Be sure to completely rinse the interior of the fountain to make sure all the soap is gone.
Some organisms and calcium deposits may get inside the pump, so it is recommended to take it apart and clean it completely. Letting it soak in vinegar for a couple of hours first will make it much easier to clean. If you want to remove build-up in your fountain, use rain water or mineral water rather than tap water, as these don’t contain any ingredients that might stick to the inside of the pump.
Finally, be sure to have a quick look at your fountain every day and add water if you notice that the level is low. Low water levels can damage the pump - and you don't want that!

Spouting or cascading fountains are not the best alternative for a small backyard since they require a great deal of space. You can choose to put in a stand-alone fountain with a flat back and an attached basin propped against a fence or wall in your backyard, or a wall-mounted type which is self-contained and hung from a wall. A fountain can be added to an existing wall if you include some sort of fountain mask as well as a basin to gather the water at the bottom. The plumbing and masonry work necessary for this kind of job requires expertise, so it is best to employ a skilled person rather than do it yourself.
