Water Transport Strategies in Early Rome
Water Transport Strategies in Early Rome Prior to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in Rome, residents who dwelled on hills had to travel even further down to gather their water from natural sources. When aqueducts or springs weren’t accessible, people living at higher elevations turned to water drawn from underground or rainwater, which was made possible by wells and cisterns. In the early sixteenth century, the city began to utilize the water that ran below ground through Acqua Vergine to deliver water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals.
Though they were primarily developed to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi began using the manholes to collect water from the channel, starting when he purchased the property in 1543. It seems that, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t adequate to satisfy his needs. By using an orifice to the aqueduct that flowed underneath his property, he was set to fulfill his water needs.
