Previous to 273, when the 1st elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was made in Roma, residents who resided on hills had to travel further down to get their water from natural sources. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the only technologies available at the time to supply water to segments of greater elevation. In the early sixteenth century, the city began to use the water that ran below ground through Acqua Vergine to furnish drinking water to Pincian Hill. Pozzi, or manholes, were made at standard intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. While these manholes were developed to make it less difficult to conserve the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use buckets to remove water from the channel, which was practiced by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he acquired the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Reportedly, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t good enough to fulfill his needs. Fortunately, the aqueduct sat just below his property, and he had a shaft opened to give him accessibility.
