A Chronicle of Outdoor Fountains
A Chronicle of Outdoor Fountains
The translation of hundreds of classical Greek texts into Latin was commissioned by the scholarly Pope Nicholas V who ruled the Church in Rome from 1397 until 1455. It was important for him to beautify the city of Rome to make it worthy of being called the capital of the Christian world. Starting in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent restoration at the behest of the Pope. Building a mostra, a grandiose commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the arrival point of an aqueduct, was a tradition revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to construct a wall fountain where we now see the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains located in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the modified aqueduct he had reconstructed.

Throughout the European countries, the primary means of spreading practical hydraulic information and fountain design suggestions were the circulated papers and illustrated publications of the day, which contributed to the evolution of scientific innovation. An un-named French fountain developer was an internationally renowned hydraulic leader in the late 1500's. With Royal mandates in Brussels, London and Germany, he began his work in Italy, building know-how in garden design and grottoes with built-in and ingenious water hydraulics. The book, “The Principles of Moving Forces,” penned near the end of his life in France, turned out to be the fundamental text on hydraulic mechanics and engineering. Classical antiquity hydraulic developments were elaborated as well as changes to essential classical antiquity hydraulic advancements in the publication. Prominent among these works were those of Archimedes, the inventor of the water screw, a mechanical method of moving water. Natural light warmed the liquid in a pair of hidden vessels next to the beautiful fountain were shown in an illustration. What occurs is the hot liquid expanded, rises and locks up the piping heading to the water feature, and thus leading to stimulation. The book also covers garden ponds, water wheels, water feature creations.
